Always Be Curious

By Elise Harrell, Intern

Before connecting with The Hoffman Agency, I was struggling to plant myself in a job, or let alone, a company. When interviewing here, it felt like the right fit. The people (now some of my incredible colleagues) who interviewed me made me feel comfortable and truly right at home – which has now trickled into my internship. I have never met or worked with such understanding and supportive individuals. Everyone genuinely wants the best for one another — both professionally and personally. I never knew that I could get so excited about work until joining The Hoffman Agency. Here, I genuinely look forward to each and every day on the job.

Ever since I can remember, I have been obsessed with researching things — I’m talking researching everything. From movie reviews, to restaurants, to the best-trending skincare products, I have always been utterly obsessed with expanding my brain with new information on the topics that I am most passionate about. This is what has always driven me toward public relations: storytelling with a sense of curiosity.

There’s nothing like being given a topic, not knowing much about it, and diving deep into the layers of what’s there, or what could be there. It’s sort of like peeling back the layers of an onion, and if there’s one thing I have learned at Hoffman thus far, it’s that the story is always there. Before joining this internship, I had no idea what a semiconductor was or knew that networks could have a digital twin (yes, that’s right, a digital TWIN). Do I always know exactly what my colleagues are talking about in our internal meetings or via email? No. Do I research it? Absolutely, because I am genuinely curious about the information I’m being given, and I want to learn more, even if it seems daunting at first. So, I go to my old and trusted source, Google search.

That said, I treat this internship and the information being discussed on my accounts like I’m researching some of the things I’m most passionate about in my spare time. It keeps things fun and interesting, and I find that every day I learn something new — kind of like when I am learning about a new movie or skincare product … but make it tech!

Because I am so actively curious and constantly researching things (even beyond this internship, as stated above), I feel overall fulfilled. This is something that is very important to me — in my internship, job, career, and life. I need to feel like I am always learning and growing to be fully happy. And when I feel happy and fulfilled, I think I do a better job as well — for both my teammates and myself.

So, what I pose to you is, stay curious and research, research, RESEARCH, and be kind and supportive toward one another. The result? You can enjoy an absolutely wonderful and supportive company culture.
